Hapag-Lloyd Announces US$1,000 GRI/GRA Increase on North America-Bound Shipments

Hapag-Lloyd has announced a General Rate Increase (GRI)/General Rate Adjustment (GRA) for cargo shipped from the Indian Subcontinent, Pakistan, and the Middle East to the United States and Canada, as ocean carriers continue to revise freight rates across major international trade lanes.

The adjustment will apply to all containers gated in on or after August 15, 2026, and will remain in effect until further notice.

According to Hapag-Lloyd, the GRI/GRA will increase by US$1,000 per container for all eligible shipments moving on the affected North America trade routes.

The surcharge applies to the following container types:

●    20-foot and 40-foot dry containers

●    Reefer containers

●    Special containers, including High Cube containers

Hapag-Lloyd stated that the new GRI/GRA will apply to all eligible container equipment transported on services from the Indian Subcontinent, Pakistan, and the Middle East to the United States and Canada.

The latest rate adjustment underscores that ocean carriers continue to revise pricing on North America-bound trade lanes as the global container shipping market remains affected by supply-demand dynamics, rising operating costs, and ongoing uncertainties across international supply chains.
