Port of Savannah Wraps Up 2025 with Second-Highest Throughput in History

The Port of Savannah concluded 2025 with the second-highest container volumes ever recorded, an achievement fueled by record rail connectivity to inland markets and sustained infrastructure investment.

The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) handled nearly 5.7 million TEUs last year, a 2.6% increase (equivalent to 146,000 TEUs) over 2024. This result trails only the record year of 2022, when throughput reached approximately 5.9 million TEUs.

According to the GPA, Savannah's performance reflects its growing role as a strategic gateway for manufacturers and distribution networks throughout the U.S. Southeast.

Rail Growth as the Key Driver

Rail volumes hit new heights in 2025. Vessel-to-train dwell times dropped to just 22 hours, a significant improvement from 28 hours at the start of the year.

The on-dock Mason Mega Rail Terminal now handles 42 double-stack trains weekly, serving key markets such as Atlanta, Memphis, Nashville, Charlotte, and Orlando.

The port handled a record 545,214 rail containers, marking the fifth consecutive year exceeding the 500,000-unit threshold. Meanwhile, the Appalachian Regional Port in Chatsworth handled 45,700 containers, up 19% year-on-year. A new inland terminal, the Blue Ridge Connector, is slated to come online by mid-2026.

Terminal Productivity Remains Strong

Regarding gate operations, Savannah processed between 14,000 and 16,000 truck moves daily in 2025. Turn times for dual truck moves (both drop-off and pick-up) averaged 50 minutes at the terminal, while single transactions averaged 32 minutes.

The port served 1,669 container vessels, moving an average of 1,878 containers per vessel. Currently, Savannah offers 39 weekly container services, the highest figure among U.S. South Atlantic and Gulf Coast ports.

In December alone, throughput reached 439,630 TEUs, a slight decrease of 0.6% compared to the same month in 2024.

Massive Expansion Projects Underway

The Georgia Ports Authority is executing a $4.5 billion self-funded investment plan. This program includes five new container berths in Savannah and a new RoRo berth in Brunswick. This is noted as the largest berth expansion project currently underway at any U.S. port.

Brunswick Faces "Headwinds" in RoRo Segment

At the Port of Brunswick, Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) volumes declined amidst global automotive market pressures.

In 2025, Brunswick handled 832,194 units, down 7.5% year-on-year. Heavy machinery accounted for 51,677 units.

The GPA stated that vehicle production cuts, factory closures, and weaker luxury exports to China weighed on RoRo volumes, despite a somewhat brighter performance in December.
