Port of Singapore 2025: Setting Double Records in Container Throughput and Bunkering

The year 2025 concluded with remarkable figures at the Port of Singapore - the world's busiest transshipment hub. The port officially recorded a new high in container throughput, reaching the 44.7 million TEU mark.

However, in terms of containerized cargo weight, a new historic peak was not established. Total containerized cargo tonnage last year reached 367.5 million tonnes, recording a slight decrease of -0.5% compared to 2024 - the year currently holding the all-time high record for tonnage.

Overall Cargo Throughput Overview

Looking at the broader picture of port operations, in 2025, this Asian maritime hub handled a total of 614.3 million tonnes of cargo (down -1.4% year-on-year).

The cargo mix showed divergent trends across segments:

•    Conventional cargo: Posted impressive growth of +15.1%, reaching 31.2 million tonnes.

•    Liquid bulk/Hydrocarbons: Declined by -5.9%, falling to 183.8 million tonnes.

•    Other bulk cargo: Set a record with 31.8 million tonnes, up +2.6%.

Solidifying the No. 1 Bunkering Hub Status

The brightest spot in the 2025 report is the new record for marine fuel supplied (bunkering) at the port. Total volumes reached 56.8 million tonnes, an increase of +3.4%.

The fuel mix clearly reflects the consumption trends of the global fleet:

•    Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (LSFO): Accounted for the largest share at 28.8 million tonnes, despite a slight decrease of -2.5%.

•    Marine Fuel Oil: Reached 21.7 million tonnes, up +7.8%.

•    Low Sulphur Marine Gas Oil (LSMGO): Reached 4.2 million tonnes, recording strong growth of +13.2%.

Strategic Partnership for the Ro-Ro Sector

Beyond the volume figures, a significant strategic move has also been announced. Port operator PSA Corporation - which handles most of Singapore's container traffic - and Japanese shipping group Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) will form a joint venture.

The goal of this joint venture is to construct a Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro-Ro) terminal directly within the Port of Singapore. The terminal is expected to commence operations within the first half of this year.
