CMA CGM Kribi: First Western Vessel to Transit Hormuz Amid US-Iran Tensions

The Malta-flagged container vessel CMA CGM Kribi has officially become the first ship from Western Europe to successfully navigate through the Strait of Hormuz since this vital waterway was blockaded by Iran.

The French-owned vessel, operated by ocean carrier CMA CGM SA, departed from waters off Dubai heading toward Iran. Throughout its voyage through the maritime corridor between the islands of Qeshm and Larak, the ship continued to openly broadcast its positioning signals (AIS).

Strategic Rift Between France and the US

This notable transit occurred shortly after French President Emmanuel Macron demonstrated a firm stance, publicly opposing the US proposal to use military force to regain control of the Strait of Hormuz. Mr. Macron labeled the idea as unrealistic, dangerous, and impractical.

The French President also added a warning that any such military move would expose the West and its forces to significant risks from Iranian ballistic missile attacks.

France's independent stance sparked a tense diplomatic war of words. Shortly after, President Trump lashed out at Mr. Macron over France's refusal to join the US-Israeli coalition's strike campaign against Iran. Unyielding, President Macron immediately fired back, stating that the US President "talks too much" and emphasizing that such remarks are "neither elegant nor befitting the office."

Iran's Selective Maritime Policy and Diplomatic Efforts

In Tehran, the Iranian government has clearly stated that restrictions on vessel transit at Hormuz apply strictly to the US and its allied nations.

Conversely, Iran remains open to allowing vessels from friendly or neutral countries to pass through. However, this operation is tightly managed: ships must strictly adhere to pre-designated routes and are required to obtain prior clearance.

Faced with complex developments threatening the stability of the global energy supply chain, France and several other Western nations have initiated diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions. However, to date, no genuine breakthroughs have been recorded at the negotiating table.
