Hapag-Lloyd Introduces Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) for Shipments to Australia

Hapag-Lloyd has announced the implementation of a Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) for shipments moving from the Far East, the Indian Subcontinent, the Middle East, and the Red Sea region to Australia.

According to the carrier, the new surcharge will take effect from mid-July 2026 as part of its efforts to address fluctuating transportation demand and rising operational costs on Asia–Australia trade routes.

Surcharge Details

Under Hapag-Lloyd’s latest tariff adjustment, the Peak Season Surcharge will be applied as follows:

●    Surcharge amount: USD 500 per TEU

●    Scope: Applicable to all container types

●    Effective date: For vessels departing on or after 15 July 2026 until further notice

Geographical Scope

The PSS will apply to cargo shipments originating from the following regions and destined for Australia:

●    Far East

●    Middle East

●    Indian Subcontinent

●    Red Sea region, including Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), Jordan, and Yemen

Carriers Continue Adjusting Freight Pricing in Response to Market Conditions

The introduction of this Peak Season Surcharge highlights how ocean carriers continue to adjust their pricing structures in response to seasonal demand fluctuations while offsetting increasing operating costs amid ongoing uncertainty in the container shipping market.

Hapag-Lloyd’s latest move also reflects a broader industry trend of tighter capacity management and operational optimization on Asia–Australia service networks as transportation demand shows signs of strengthening.

As carriers continue to balance capacity deployment with evolving market conditions, additional rate adjustments and surcharges may remain a key feature of the Asia–Australia trade in the coming months.
