China's Hudong Zhonghua shipyard (Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co Ltd) is adding more container spaces in its megamax designs to break new size records for container shipping.
The MSC Tessa was launched at Changxing Jiangnan Shipyard this week. Despite being the same size as the Ever Alot, the first ship in the world to reach the 24,000 TEU mark. The new container vesel will reach a new record when it has an extra 112 slots. The MSC Tessa has a capacity of 24,116 TEUs.
The 399.99-meter-long MSC Tessa is one of four ships of the MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Co) that have ordered at the shipyard of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC).
According to CSSC, the extra slots from the so-called "Hudong type" class of boxships compared to the Ever Alot, built by the same yard, were achieved via optimising the superstructure and the radar mast.
Container ship size records have been broken several times in recent years, surpassing the 20,000 TEU mark for the first time in 2017. Container ships have more than tripled in size in terms of capacity since the beginning of this century.
