History of the shipping line MSC

MSC was founded in Naples in 1970 as a private company by captain Gianluigi Aponte when he purchased his first ship, Patricia, then Rafaela, from which Aponte started a shipping line between the Mediterranean and Somalia. Later, the company expanded through the purchase of used cargo ships. By 1977, the company operated services to the Northern Europe, Africa and the Indian Ocean. Expansion continued in the 1980s; By the end of the decade, MSC operated ships to North America and Australia. [3]

In 1989, MSC acquired the cruise ship operator Lauro Lines, renamed the Mediterranean Cruise Company (MSC Cruises) in 1995, and then strengthened its cruises business. [3]

In 1994, the company ordered its first new-built ships, which began in 1996 with MSC Alexa. They are built by the Italian shipbuilder, Fincantieri. [3]

In October 2014, Diego Aponte (son of MSC founder Gianluigi Aponte) was appointed president and CEO of MSC, taking over from father, he was appointed as group executive chairman. Gianluigi Aponte will continue to oversee all corporate related activities as well as assist Diego in shaping the future of the MSC.

MSC operates vessels of up to 23,756 TEU, including (as of 2019) the world's two largest container ships, the MSC Gülsün [6] and the MSC Samar. The company remains independent and wholly owned by the Aponte family under the leadership of Diego Aponte, whom his father and founder of the company - Gian Luigi - appointed Chairman and CEO in October 2014.

In May 2014, MSC closed an agreement to order two new ships from the Italian shipbuilder - Fincantieri - with an order worth € 2.1 billion. [7]

In August 2014, MSC ordered a new cruise ship worth up to € 3 billion ($ 4.13 billion) from STX France. Shipbuilding company Saint-Nazaire built two ships for the company for 1.5 billion euros. The first ship is due in the first half of 2017 and the second in the first half of 2019. The contracts will provide 16 million hours of work for the French shipbuilder. Orders have been on the card since February, with ship sizes around 160,000 gt. The passenger capacity will be around 4,000 people. [8]

In December 2014, MSC was ranked 6th on the Lloyd's List of 100 Most Influential Companies in the Shipping Industry.

In January 2015, MSC launched the largest container ship, MSC Oscar, with a capacity of 19,224 TEUs. Built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering and registered in Panama, it entered the Albatross service in January as part of the 2M VSA (Ship Sharing Agreement between Maersk Line and MSC). Then in 2015, MSC launched three more container ships of the same capacity and named them MSC Oliver, MSC Zoe and MSC Maya.

In February 2017, MSC acquired a 49% stake in Messina Line, an Italian shipping line established in Genoa, Italy in 1929, specializing in short inland Mediterranean sea routes and routes from Europe to East and West Africa. The company owns eight Roll-on / roll-off vessels and one port in the Port of Genoa, a leading fleet of container ships with a capacity of 65,000 teu.

In January 2018, MSC announced the launch of a regular dedicated Roll-on / roll-off service between Northern Europe and West Africa, [9] by deploying two car carriers: MSC Immacolata and MSC Cristiana, has previously been hired from other firms. [10]
