In August, the Port of Oakland experienced a decline in container volume compared to the same month last year, with the Californian port handling 135,253 TEUs, marking a 13.1% year-on-year decrease.

"However, the robust volume in August 2022 draws an unrealistic comparison to this August’s numbers," noted the port administration.

Despite this decline in container volumes, vessel calls at the Port of Oakland have been on an upward trajectory throughout 2023. By the end of August, the port had seen a total of 650 vessel calls, reflecting a substantial 13% increase over the number of vessel calls in August 2022.

Port officials emphasized that "This indicates that port operations are running smoothly, boasting better on-time performance of ships, and less congestion at docks and at inland warehouses."

Port of Oakland Maritime Director Bryan Brandes commented, "while August's container volumes might not have met our expectations, there are promising indicators for the seaport's future." Adding, “Improved port operations, coupled with our on-going investment in greening the port, will provide on-going benefits to importers and exporters.”

A more detailed breakdown of the August container data reveals that full imports saw a 17.5% decrease, amounting to 72,481 TEUs, while full exports experienced a 7.5% reduction, totaling 62,733 TEUs. Empty imports also decreased by 11.1%, moving 13,329 TEUs in August 2023, while empty exports saw a more substantial decline of 29.6%, recording 30,579 TEUs.

The decline in exports is attributed to the ongoing decrease in the export of waste paper and recyclable materials for processing. Nevertheless, there is optimism that agricultural exports will see an upturn in the near future.

The port's announcement emphasized that vessels are operating on schedule and efficiently unloading and loading cargo with minimal disruptions. These favorable conditions, especially for exporters, bode well for the Port of Oakland's continued operations.
