Decoding Gemini’s Strategy: Reducing North Europe Capacity While Expanding Its Mediterranean Presence
.webp)
In Issue 768 of its Sunday Spotlight newsletter, Sea Intelligence provided a detailed analysis of Gemini Cooperation’s container fleet deployment strategy across the major East–West trade lanes, highlighting notable shifts in the alliance’s capacity allocation approach.
While headline figures suggest that Gemini’s capacity market share has declined on several key trade routes, the 8-week running average data reveals a deliberate network restructuring strategy. Specifically, Gemini is scaling back deployment on the Transpacific and Asia–North Europe (Asia–NEUR) trades while expanding capacity on the Asia–Mediterranean (Asia–MED) corridor.

The chart illustrates a significant increase in Gemini Cooperation’s capacity market share on the Asia–Mediterranean (Asia-MED) trade lane, which is expected to approach 30% during June–July 2026. In contrast, the alliance’s share on the Asia–North Europe (Asia-NEUR) corridor is trending lower. This development reflects Gemini’s deliberate capacity reallocation strategy across the East–West trades, shifting deployment from North Europe services toward the Mediterranean market to strengthen its presence and expand service coverage in the region.
Scaling Back Capacity on the Asia–North Europe Trade
On the Asia–North Europe route, Gemini’s capacity market share declined from 25.7% in mid-May to 22.5% in June 2026.
The primary driver behind this reduction was a fleet adjustment on the AE3/NE3 service. Following two weeks of blank sailings in early June, Gemini resumed the service but replaced vessels with capacities exceeding 18,000 TEUs with smaller ships in the 14,000–15,000 TEU range.
This vessel downsizing reduced deployed capacity on the service by approximately 5,500 TEUs per week.
Expanding Aggressively on the Asia–Mediterranean Trade
In contrast to its strategy in North Europe, Gemini is significantly increasing its presence on the Asia–Mediterranean trade lane. According to projections, the alliance’s capacity market share on the Asia–MED route is expected to rise from 23.4% to 29.7% by July 2026. This growth is being driven by two key initiatives implemented during the second quarter of 2026:
● The addition of a fourth service loop through the AE19/SE4 service, operated with vessels of approximately 14,000 TEUs.
● The upgrade of the AE15/SE3 service from vessels averaging 13,100 TEUs to larger ships with capacities of around 18,400 TEUs.
The data also highlights a clear fleet redeployment strategy. Vessels with capacities of approximately 18,000 TEUs that were withdrawn from the Asia–North Europe trade have been reassigned to Mediterranean services to support the alliance’s expansion plans.
As a result, Gemini has added approximately 22,402 TEUs of weekly capacity to the Mediterranean region, increasing its overall capacity market share to roughly 28.1%.
Reshaping Its Service Network
From a broader perspective, Gemini appears to be pursuing a strategy focused on strengthening its position in the Asia–Mediterranean trade through concentrated capacity deployment and expanded service coverage across the region.
This approach differs markedly from that of Ocean Alliance, which continues to maintain a relatively balanced capacity allocation across the major East–West trade lanes.
Current developments suggest that Gemini is prioritizing resources in markets it considers to offer stronger growth potential and greater opportunities for operational optimization, rather than maintaining an equal capacity presence across all service routes.
