Hapag-Lloyd's fleet of 1.6 million containers will be equipped with tracking devices until 2024, and the company is celebrating the installation of its 700,000th tracking device, a key moment on its path to creating the world's largest fleet of intelligent containers.

This Monday, at the company's headquarters in Hamburg, the German Federal Minister of Digital and Transport, Dr. Volker Wissing, personally installed the device on a container. “Digitalisation offers great opportunities for the transport industry. One sign of this is the progress made by Hapag-Lloyd in building an intelligent container fleet. Such advances not only benefit shipping but strengthen Germany as a location for innovation and contribute to our vision of a better connected and more efficient transport sector,” Wissing said.

“We are proud to be at the forefront of the digitalisation of container shipping. Our ‘Smart Container Fleet’ project is about transforming the industry and setting new standards for supply-chain transparency and customer service,” added Hapag-Lloyd CEO Rolf Habben Jansen.

Dry container monitoring will change the game, as the permanent installation of real-time tracking technology and data collection from standard containers will enhance visibility and answer the important question: “Where is my container now?”

The solar-powered tracking devices, equipped with internal sensors and GPS, will transmit data over cellular networks in addition to recording shock events and ambient temperatures. These devices are explosion-proof in accordance with established standards that ensure the safety of crew, cargo and ships.

Much of Hapag-Lloyd's container fleet will be smart by early 2024. At the same time, Hapag-Lloyd is planning to launch a corresponding commercial product called “Live Position”.
