According to Zhoushan Changhong International Shipyard announced on August 9, MSC - which has replaced Maersk Line to become the world's largest container shipping line by 2022 - has ordered ten new LNG dual-fuelled 10,300 TEU container ships.
These newly built container ships are expected to be delivered from the second half of 2026 until 2027.
In December 2022, MSC placed an order for ten 11,500 TEU dual-fuel LNG container ships at the same shipyard, with delivery scheduled between 2025 and 2026.
Zhoushan Changhong said that like the previous order, MSC's latest new ships are based on China International Marine Containers’ (CIMC) Ocean Engineering Design & Research Institute’s design, including the largest type-C LNG fuel storage tank, allowing ships to complete a single round trip on China-Europe or China-US routes.
The latest orders show that MSC remains optimistic about the LNG dual-fuel engine. Although many mainline operators, including Maersk Line and CMA CGM, have commissioned a large number of methanol-powered container ships since 2022, MSC’s newbuildings are primarily LNG-powered.
According to Clarksons data, of the 74 new-build ships ordered directly by MSC, at least 60 are LNG-powered medium and large ships. The remaining 14 ships, which are feeders, are usually fuel oil powered.
Alphaliner shows that MSC currently operates 774 vessels with a capacity of over 5.2 million TEU, of which 276 are owned by a capacity of 2.48 million TEU. The Swiss-Italian carrier has 116 vessels with more than 1.44 million TEUs on order, including vessels committed to long-term charters from tonnage providers.
