According to the Marine Exchange of Southern California, the number of container ships moored or in the waiting areas of the two ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach was 79 as of October 21, while 29 vessels were docked. This was an increase of eight ships waiting in San Pedro Bay a day earlier, while the number of ships loading and unloading at ports decreased by four.
The Maritime Exchange said earlier this week that it expected a high and record number of ships in the port, with ships in the 40-mile Los Angeles and Long Beach port areas considered "in port”.
Overall, 169 ships docked last Thursday with 109 vessels moored at designated moorings or waiting areas used when the berths are full. A total of 55 ships are in waiting areas including 44 container ships, as well as three tankers and eight cargo ships.
According to Marine Exchange, the normal number of ships moored in 2018/2019 at two Southern California ports was 17 ships, which means that the number of ships moored today is 93 more ships than normal.
The Biden administration has ordered ports to operate 24/7 in an effort to clear the backlog, however, severe bottlenecks are currently occurring throughout the supply chain.
