10 crew members abandoned the Zim Kingston when it caught fire off Victoria, BC, Canada after losing several containers; Firefighting efforts are still ongoing.

The Canadian Coast Guard says it is monitoring the fire that broke out aboard the ZIM Kingston off the coast of Victoria, British Columbia and is working with the US Coast Guard to assess situation.
"The Canadian Coast Guard received a report around 11am this morning from the MV Zim Kingston that a fire has broken out in the damaged containers onboard," the agency said in a statement. at the end of Saturday.

According to CBC News, 10 crew members were evacuated, while 11 others remained on board. A total of six containers caught fire.
The report added that the ship was believed to be carrying more than 52,000 kilograms of xanthate - a chemical used in the mining industry - including potassium amylxanthate. Potassium amylxanthate is considered an irritant and hazardous to the environment.
Video obtained by Reuters shows fire from the deck into the water.
The Canadian Coast Guard said the agency's response was being coordinated to provide assistance, adding that an assessment was underway to identify potential contamination risks from the containers.
The Zim Kingston on Friday reported that it had encountered severe weather west of the Juan de Fuca Strait. The US Coast Guard said in a tweet about 40 containers from the ship fell onto the vessel.

The container ship ZIM Kingston, with a Maltese flag, has a capacity of 4,253 TEUs built in 2008.
