Container throughput at Panama ports increased by 8.8% in the first 5 months of the year
According to statistics from the Panama Maritime Authority (PMA), container cargo throughput at Panama's ports increased by 8.8% to 2.01 million TEU from January to May 2021 compared to same period last year.
Colon Container Terminal (CCT) in Panama
Manzanillo International Terminal-Panama (MIT), located on the Atlantic side, leads the way in container cargo volume with 671,473teu, up 7.9%. Followed by the port of Balboa, located on the Pacific side, shipped 558,060 teu, up 22.7%.
Colon Container Terminal (CCT), managed by Evergreen, located on the Atlantic side, also posted strong growth of 19.2% with a throughput of 198,170 teu. CCT, the first year after three years of decline, has returned to positive numbers.
However, PSA Panama International Port, is the third largest port in terms of cargo throughput with 282,223 teu but decreased by 3.2%.
Additionally, Cristobal Port, on the Atlantic side, managed by Hutchison Ports, also fell 6% to 270,381 teu.
