Alphaliner reports that MSC's fleet has grown nearly 20% in the past year, with 815 ships and 583,700 reefer plugs installed, representing an increase of nearly 18%.

Only shipping line ONE (Ocean Network Express) recorded a larger increase in the number of reefer plugs, with about 23%. The Japanese global shipping line increased its total fleet by 17.5%.

Meanwhile, Korean shipping company HMM is the only company to reduce reefer container capacity, down by more than 1%, because they reduced their total fleet by more than 2% after returning some leased ships.

It is not surprising that the ranking of the World's top 10 shipping lines by number of reefer plugs is often related to the ranking by total fleet capacity. An exception is ZIM Line, ranked 10th, but the shipping company with the eighth largest reefer container capacity. This Israeli shipping line can deploy more than 22% of its fleet to transport refrigerated containers.

Alphaliner’s reefer plug count confirm that European shipping lines have a larger proportion of their total capacity available to transport reefer cargo. The percentage of available plugged-in reefer boxes ranges from 20% for MSC to 23% for Maersk Line, with CMA CGM (22.5%) and Hapag-Lloyd (21.2%) in between. This compares with 15.7%-17.5% for their Asian competitors, ONE on the high end and HMM on the low end.
