U.S. railroad company Union Pacific (UP) will gradually resume operations from the West Coast to Chicago, after it began suspending rail shipments on July 18.
"We will continue to operate in a staggered approach," a company representative told Container News.
The suspension includes container routes from the ports of Los Angeles, Long Beach and Oakland in California and the port of Tacoma in Washington, which is expected to last about a week.
A Union Pacific spokesperson said, “Union Pacific has been actively working to help alleviate bottlenecks in international intermodal supply chains, despite the impact on our service metrics.”
He further explained, "We are suspending shipments from ports in the West Coast region shipping eastwards to address congestion at inland ports, particularly in Chicago, where shippers struggling to get cargo containers from our terminal."
