Singapore Changi Airport handled 512,000 tonnes of air cargo in Q3 2024 (July to September), up 13.5% year-on-year.

The airport authority said the growth was seen across all cargo flows - exports, imports and transshipments, driven by major improvements on China and US routes.

Changi Airport Group executive vice-president of air hub and cargo development Lim Ching Kiat said the airport has been working closely with Chinese airlines to add new routes to Jieyang Chaoshan, Linyi, Quanzhou and Taiyuan, along with increasing flights to key cities including Shanghai, Beijing and Chongqing.

Changi’s top five air cargo markets in Q3 2023 are Australia, China, Hong Kong, India and the United States.

Passenger traffic at Changi grew 10% in the quarter to 16.8 million.

Earlier in October, SF Express Singapore opened a new airside logistics facility at Changi Airfreight Centre as part of its SATS Core A warehouse.

The direct access to the airside is expected to cut processing times from four to six hours to 1.5 to two hours.

The facility enables efficient transfer of cargo between the apron and logistics centre and speeds up import processing times.

The airport has also opened Changi Nexus One, a refurbished airfreight logistics building within the Airfreight Centre.

The facility, which also has direct access to the apron, comprises nearly 8,000m2 of warehouse space and is designed to accommodate two cargo handling units.

The facility will increase the airport’s logistics warehousing capacity and meet the growing demand for airfreight services.
