Another ship operated by Taiwan's Evergreen shipping line ran aground, almost exactly a year after the Ever Given ran aground and obstructed traffic in the Suez Canal.
The 12,118 teu Ever Forward, built in 2020, is deployed on Evergreen's East Asia-US east coast service. Ever Forward sailed from the port of Baltimore for Norfolk at 8:40 p.m. Sunday and ran aground in shallow water.
VesselsValue reports that the ship had a draft of 15.5 meters, but the water level at that time in Chesapeake Bay was only 7.6 meters deep.

The US Coast Guard is still working to free the ship. According to Evergreen shipping company, there have not been any signs of oil leakage, none of the ship's crew were injured and the cargo containers were still intact.
An Evergreen spokesperson said: “Evergreen is arranging for divers to conduct underwater inspections to confirm any damage to the vessel and is coordinating with all concerned parties to refloat the ship as soon as possible.”
Unlike the 20,124-teu Ever Given vessel, which blocked vessel traffic in the Suez Canal from March 23 to 29 last year, Evergreen said Ever Forward did not disrupt vessel navigation in the bay. Bloomberg quoted William P Doyle, executive director of Maryland Port Association, as saying that ships can still proceed to the port of Baltimore. However, they are advised to slow down when traveling through the bay.
Meanwhile, Evergreen announced its 2021 net profit increased ninefold to US$9.5 billion, as the container shipping industry recorded record profits for the second year in a row amid supply chain bottlenecks.
