More than 10 containers were damaged in a fire that broke out at a container yard in Hong Kong's Yau Ma Tei district on October 14.

The fire, believed to be plastic, broke out at around 5:06 p.m. local time and took 14 hours to bring under control. There were no reports of injuries.

The Hong Kong Fire Services Department said the fire involved about 10 containers in the Yau Ma Tei Public Cargo Working Area (PCWA). Firefighters used drones to help find the source of the fire and used several wells on the street to collect water. Fire boats were also deployed to pump seawater directly into the fire.

Firefighting cranes were used to move the burning containers to the ground one by one, then opened them and inspected them to extinguish the sparks.

The fire then spread to a barge, covering an area measuring 20 metres by 20 metres. The fire alarm was raised to Level 3 at 6pm and additional fire extinguishers and water hoses were sent to the scene.

The fire was declared under control at 3.11am local time on 15 October.

Flames and black smoke billowed into the sky, prompting the fire department to urge nearby residents to close their doors and windows.
